Meet Our Rector
Rev. Beth Magill began her call as 7th Rector of St. Michael's on Sunday, December 10, 2017.
A native of Alexandria, Beth grew up as a member of Christ Church in Old Town. From a young age her parents instilled in her that participation was the most important part of the "work of the people." As a result, she was very active in the church, community and Diocese, including serving as a counselor at St. George’s summer youth camp at Shrine Mont.
Beth attended William & Mary as an undergrad, receiving a BA in Sociology. Soon after, she attended Yale for her Masters of Divinity and Diploma of Anglican Studies. Ordained in 2009, Beth's first call took her to the Diocese of Texas where she served as an Associate at St. David's in Austin.
Her next call was as Missioner to the University of Texas, where for five years, Beth served as the sole preacher and worship leader at the largest Episcopal Student Center in the state, and was also responsible for all fiduciary responsibilities (including successful stewardship efforts), supervision of staff, training of lay leaders, convener of discernment committees and upkeep of all facilities.
After her work at UT, Beth was tapped by the Bishop of Texas for a Diocesan-wide position as Missioner for Congregational Initiatives. In this role, she oversaw all campus ministries in the Diocese—including the start of six new campus ministries—and traveled throughout the state working to enhance congregations large and small.
On-street parking, including reserved handicap parking spaces, is available around the church. Access for persons with disabilities is via the Office entrance on N. 11th Road. An interior elevator provides access between the Sanctuary and Parish Hall.
Our Governance Governance of St. Michael's is the responsibility of the Rector and Vestry, in accordance with the Constitution and Canons of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia. The Vestry has also chartered a number of committees to assist with governance and stewardship at St. Michael's. Last year the Vestry approved an updated strategic plan for St. Michael’s: Steps Along the Path 2017-2020. Prepared by the Vision and Planning Committee, the strategic plan is intended to inform Vestry and parish-wide decisions, including our priorities for the future.
Sow Bountifully St. Paul tells us, "The point is this: the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully." (2 Corinthians 9:6) In the Sow Bountifully Stewardship Campaign, we are called to support St. Michael's mission and ministries by pledging to establish a solid financial base for 2018.
About Our History St. Michael's was formed in 1945, and the early parish met in borrowed space until moving into the newly-constructed church building in 1948. >Learn about our History.
